The Doctor
The Doctor is a Time Lord: the last of a human-like alien race from the planet Gallifrey. He's now over nine-hundred years old and has a great attachment to the planet Earth, where he was exiled to during his third body. On his home planet, he was always considered as being a rogue element after stealing a TARDIS because he favoured exploration over observation.
The Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston)

Unlike all the other actors before him, Christopher Eccleston played the ninth Doctor with a Northern accent, which, combined with a more street-like attire, made him appear more like an average human being than an alien.

The ninth Doctor lost none of the eccentricty though, preferring to make an entrance, rather than being discreet. He was sometimes playful and at other times deadly serious and cared deeply for his companions.
The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant)

Having regenerated after swallowing the contents of the time vortex, the ninth Doctor was forced to regenerate to save himself. After a quite horrific regeneration, he now has a completely new body.

The tenth Doctor is a quite manic and comic character. He appears to treat things a little less seriously than he should, but still manages to save the day.
The Companions
Since kidnapping school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright from the year 1963, the Doctor has almost always travelled with a human companion for company. Below are his most recent time-travelling companions.
Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman)

Martha Jones is a medical student who hopes to qualify and become a Doctor. She has a family who are in a mess. They turn to her for help and guidance but she seems unhappy at always being caught in the middle.

She meets the Doctor in the street randomly and soon discovers that he's more than just another Human. At the end of her brother's catastrophic twenty-first birthday party, she decides to join the Doctor in his TARDIS.
Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)

Rose Tyler is a typical London girl. She lives at home in a flat with her mum and has a boyfriend named Mickey. She starts off with a job at a department store - which has been blown up!

She has a lot of curiosity and a willingness to help people. In episode one she saves the Doctor and the world by using her ingenuity. She leaves Mickey and her family behind for a new life travelling with the Doctor. Her time ends when she is saved by Pete from the void.
Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)

Jack was initially a time-travelling con-man with a grudge. After the Doctor and Rose clear up his mess, he joins them on their adventures.

His time with the Doctor and Rose comes to an end when he is left stranded on the Games Station. However, he manages to get back to Earth and is now the head of Torchwood.
Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke)

Mickey is Rose's former boyfriend. He began as a very wimpish character but has gradually become more aware, braver and more resigned to Rose's constant travelling. After notifying the Doctor of the mysterious goings on at a school, he was finally able to join the TARDIS crew and began his travels through time and space.

His adventures were sadly cut short when he decided to stay on parallel Earth with his nan.
Donna Noble (Catherine Tate)

Donna was transported into the TARDIS in the middle of her wedding and, despite being stuck with the Doctor for the duration of the journey home, ended up liking him after he defeated the Empress of the Racnoss.

After one adventure, she felt that a life with the Doctor was not for her and returned to her parents' house with an ambition to see more of the world.
Adam Mitchell (Bruno Langley)

Adam was the genius collector for Van Statten before he started his journey. A self proclaimed genius at hacking, he became part of the crew after an invitation from Rose.

Unfortunately during his visit to Satellite Five, he got too many ideas and decided that he was going to know what the future holds so he transmitted it down Rose's phone 198,000 years into the past to his home. Then he got taken back there and left with a 'chip' in his head.
