The Story
The Doctor and Rose land on present day Earth to visit Jackie, when Jackie reveals that ghosts have been appearing all over the world and that these “shifts” have been going on for ten weeks. When the Doctor investigates this strange occurrence he ends up in the Torchwood Institute, which occupies the top of the Canary Wharf building.

Torchwood itself conceals a treasure trove of alien technology including one ‘Void ship’ used for travelling between dimensions. All is not as it seems as three members of Torchwood fall victim to the Cybermen and, under their influence, increase the ghost shift power to 100% which brings the rest of the Cybermen through the void and opens up the Void ship to reveal three awaiting Daleks!...

The Daleks and Cybermen meet and the Daleks refuse the Cyberman’s offer of an alliance. As the Daleks prepare to activate the Genesis arc, the Cybermen call in re-enforcements to delete the Daleks. At the same time, Pete Tyler arrives with some more of his own force, which kill the Cyberleader.

Rose and Mickey are rescued from the Daleks as they transport the Genesis arc to the top of the building, destroying many of the remaining Cybermen as they do so. When the arc is lifted out of the roof, its contents of several million Daleks emerge and fire on anything moving on the streets below.

The Doctor’s solution is to ask Pete, Jackie, Rose, Mickey and the others to jump over to the parallel Earth to escape the vacuum he is about to create. The vacuum sucks the Daleks and Cybermen into the void and seals the breach. Later the Doctor says goodbye to Rose and finds himself saddled with an unwanted passenger.

Memorable Quotes
Rose: This is the story of how I died.

Doctor: Since when did Ghosts have shifts? Since when did shifts have Ghosts?!

Doctor: But a footprint doesn't look like a Boot.

Dalek: This is not war, this is pest control!

Doctor: I surrender unto you; a very good idea.

The Runaway Bride: Who are you?... Where am I?... What the hell is this place!?

Editor's Review
Army of Ghosts is the best Russell T. Davies script of the second series thus far. The Cybermen appear just as menacing as they did in the two part story shown earlier in the series and there’s a new black Dalek on show. Tracy-Ann Oberman does a good job at playing the overpowering, know-all head of Torchwood and it’s nice to see Noel Clarke is back for one last story.

Doomsday was a truly epic conclusion to both the story and to the second series. The two negatives in the episode were Rose’s dialogue, which was a bit irritating. Her interaction with the Daleks was arrogant and she was too full of herself. Secondly, I felt that the ending was far too long. The goodbye scene seemed to last an eternity because it included Rose talking about her new life in the parallel Earth and then a long conversation with the Doctor that was cut short.

Catherine Tate’s inclusion in The Runaway Bride is proving to be a divisive issue (on one forum at least). The younger viewers will no doubt want her to not be “bovvered” whereas others might find her irritating. There’s no way of knowing until Christmas though.

I thought that all the cast were excellent and I am sad to see Billie Piper leave the series as she has had a very successful two years. (Dan Ludlow)
