The Story
The Doctor and Rose land on a Human base that's stuck on a planet caught in orbit around a black hole. As soon as they arrive, a tremor occurs and the storage section in which the TARDIS had landed disappeared down a large gap in the surface leaving them stranded.

The Humans are drilling deep into the planet's surface to find a very powerful power source with the help of the Ood - a telepathically linked race of slaves. Events begin to turn sour, however, when Toby, the mission Archaeologist gets possessed by some unknown force. Soon afterwards one of the crew is killed as he destroys a section of the base.

Once drilling is complete, the Doctor accompanies Ida (the chief scientist) down to the site of the power source where they find a large circular object, which begins to open as Satan transfers itself into the Ood, who begin to advance...

Jefferson opens fire on the Ood as Danny runs out to join them. Captain Zachary, meanwhile, is trapped in the control centre. The lights go out and 'The Beast' announces its intention to kill everyone on the Sanctuary base. The Doctor and Ida are about to return when the cable holding the lift snaps, leaving them trapped ten miles below.

As the Ood break down the door, Rose, Jefferson, Toby and Danny dive into the service tunnels and head for Ood habitation in an attempt to stop them. The Doctor decides to head down into the pit to confront whatever is down there.

After the Ood are paralysed, Captain Zach joins the other survivors and decides to evacuate the planet. He says sorry to the trapped Ida as they blast off in the Rocket. Little do they know that they have an unwanted passenger aboard...

Memorable Quotes
Ood: The Beast and his armies shall rise from the Pit to make war against God.

The Beast: Toby. Don't turn around. Don't look at me... If you look at me, you will die.

Rose: He is awake?
Ood: And you shall worship him.

Doctor: I've got a nasty feeling the word might be trap door.

Doctor: For once in my life Officer Scott, I'm going to say... withdraw.

The Beast: The disciples of the Light rose up against me and chained me in the pit for all eternity.

The Beast: Nothing shall ever destroy me!
Rose: Go to hell!

Editor's Review
I really enjoyed Matt Jones’ two part story. It was the first trip to an alien planet in two years of the show – hooray! The story ends without us knowing whether The Beast was really Satan itself. The Doctor himself just decides not to try and explain it and moves on, which was the only ending the story could have had.

The casting was good once again. Shaun Parkes played his Captain role in much the same way as his role in BBC3’s Casanova, playing a dependable and reliable Captain. Will Thorp also played Toby quite well and managed to pull off the possessed by the Devil moments. I didn’t want Scooti to perish in The Impossible Planet as MyAnna Buring is a promising actress. They do seem to kill off the nicest looking female whenever they can!

This story has made me more of a fan of two-part stories. I’d really like to see more of them in the future. Thanks to Matt Jones for an enjoyable two weeks of Who. (Dan Ludlow)
