The Story
The TARDIS is wrecked by a huge explosion that takes it out of the time vortex. Mickey opens the door to an alternative version of Earth - they have landed on the day of Jackie's fortieth birthday (or, officially, her thirty-ninth).

Rose drags the Doctor along to meet up with Jackie and Pete (who is also alive in this alternative reality) at their mansion where they pose as staff at Jackie’s party. Mickey, meanwhile, goes to visit his Nan and after a short conversation with her on her doorstep, he is bundled into the back of a Van and driven to a house where he meets the alternative him, whose name is Ricky.

Meanwhile, above the skies of London, Businessman John Lumic is dying, but wants to live forever and the President of Great Britain refuses to allow his Cyber-conversion project to go ahead. Naturally that doesn't stop him, when, moments later, his new breed of Cybermen are unleashed on the Tyler's mansion.

The President is dead and the Doctor; Rose; Pete; Mickey; Ricky and his friends have been cornered by the Cybermen, who plan to "delete" them!

Luckily, the Doctor still has his power source and uses it to disable them. The team then set off towards Battersea Power Station to end John Lumic's plans. On the way, Pete Tyler reveals himself to be 'Gemini' - the source of The Preacher’s inside information.

Once there, they split up. Mickey and Jake are charged with destroying the Cyber control signal that's leading the population of London to the Power station for conversion. The Doctor and Mrs Moore travel down a tunnel to enter unnoticed, whilst Rose and Pete go in through the front door in an attempt to rescue Jackie.

Sadly, Mrs Moore is killed. The Doctor, Rose and Pete are captured and they're too late to save Jackie - she's already been converted. Mickey and Jake are having more luck and have infiltrated Lumic's Zeppelin, but a Cyberman is about to wake up behind them...

Memorable Quotes
Ricky: ... and we're going to bring him [John Lumic] down.
Mickey: From your Kitchen?
Ricky: Have you got a problem with that?
Mickey: No, it's a good Kitchen

Cyberman: You are rogue elements. You are incompatible. You will be deleted.

Lumic: I will upgrade. Only, with my last breath.
Cyberman: Then breathe no more.

Cyberman: You are not upgraded.
Mrs Moore: Yeah. Well. Upgrade this!

Mickey: [His last words] Nothing wrong with a Van. I once saved the Universe with a big yellow truck.

Editor's Review
Both episodes of Tom MacRae’s Cyberman story are epic viewing. In the first episode, we see a completely revitalised Pete Tyler, who is seemingly working as a henchman for John Lumic, who in turn is played brilliantly by Roger Lloyd Pack. Over the story, Mickey sheds his weedy image by saving the day again. He also discovers that his Nan is still alive on this parallel Earth. Mickey fans will not be pleased with the ending to the story; however, as he decides to stay on parallel Earth and help Jake save the world from the Cybermen.

The Cybermen themselves are well realised. The design gives them a far tougher look and a voice that older fans will recognise from an earlier Cyberman story entitled The Invasion. It’s also a good episode for David Tennant as he continues to play the Doctor well and his dialogue is free of cringe worthy, child-like lines.

Tom MacRae has penned a brilliant two-part story. I hope that he given the chance to write a few more.
