It's Christmas Eve; 1869 in Cardiff and there are some strange goings on in the Undertakers. Dead bodies keep coming to life! Mr Snead and his maid Gwyneth begin by tracking down the latest one.
They are lead to the local playhouse where Charles Dickens is reciting one of his plays, during which the audience and Charles himself see a ghost come to life!
The Doctor and Rose follow the screams and find these gas creatures floating about. Rose is kidnapped when she tries to stop the undertakers removing the body that the gas creatures inhibited.
The Doctor and Charles Dickens make chase to the undertakers. Rose is rescued and details of the ghostly happenings are told. They perform a séance to bring the creatures out.
The Gelth are in need of a physical form and require Gwyneth (who is gifted with a foresight) to help bring them to Earth to use the dead bodies for their survival -
but they have been tricked and the Gelth come en masse and start taking over bodies!
Luckily, Dickens figures out a way to kill them - turning the gas lanterns out and turning up the gas to create an explosion. The Doctor and Rose manage to get out of their tight spot and;
after the Doctor realises that Gwyneth is dead, leaves her to destroy the undertakers and the Gelth.
