The Story
The Doctor takes Rose five billion years into the future to witness the end of the world, where they join a whole host of aliens on 'Platform One' to witness the event. Amongst them are 'The Moxx of Balhoon' and Cassandra - the last human being.

However, things start to turn nasty. Someone has released a number of robotic spiders that are used to gain control of the central computer and destroy 'Platform One'! The steward is killed and Rose nearly dies as they are sat in rooms when the sun filters are closed down.

The Doctor and Jabe (one of the Trees) go and investigate and; after scanning the Doctor, it is revealed that he is the last of the timelords. They find one of the spiders and Cassandra is revealed to have plotted the station's demise for compensation. Cassandra uses a teleport and leaves the station whilst her spiders finish their task. The Doctor and Jabe are then left to save the Platform. Jabe is burnt in the process and the Doctor is just about able to reset the computer.

The story ends as the Doctor takes Rose back to the 21st century, where he reveals more of the timelord's demise. Gallifrey has been destroyed in a war killing all but the Doctor. Rose changes the subject and they both go to buy some chips.

Memorable Quotes
Rose: [To Cassandra] 'Better to die than live like you: a bitchy trampoline!'

Doctor: [To Jabe] 'I was onboard another ship once. They said that was unsinkable. I ended up clinging to an iceberg and it wasn't half cold!'

Doctor: [To Rose at the end] 'I'm a timelord. I'm the last of the timelords'

Editor's Review
The End of the World is a great story, although it lacks the impact of 'Rose'; most likely because I am more settled into the series. It has the most CGI shots and puts them to great use. One of the screenshots above shows how to create a proper teleportation effect - take that Star Trek! The one thing that I like is that the bad guy wasn't predictable. Originally fellow fans and I assumed Moxx to be the baddie, but were surprised by it turning out to be Cassandra instead.

One of the more humorous things in the story is that objects from the Earth's past are wrongly named. A Jukebox is an ipod allegedly! Also, 'Toxic' by Britney Spears is considered to be a classic ballad. (Dan Ludlow)
