The Story
The story begins with Rose at work. Its closing time and she heads downstairs to hand over some lottery winnings to Wilson (the chief electrician). When she does, she comes face to face with some plastic dummies that come alive in the basement! This strange man, who later reveals himself as 'The Doctor' saves her and destroys the department store by stopping the relay device hidden on the roof that is controlling them.

The next day, the Doctor is tracking a signal, which leads him to Rose's flat and finds the arm that he pulled of in their escape the day before. It attacks him, but he luckily finds out the frequency and disables it. Rose then gets very curious about him and after failing to find out who he is, goes on a web search. That search leads her to a man that seems to have a record on the Doctor...

Whilst waiting outside, boyfriend Mickey is engulfed by a plastic bin and his mind is used to make a plastic replica, who questions her in a restaurant. Luckily the Doctor is on hand and they escape into the TARDIS, something that Rose cannot believe!

The story ends when they find the Nestene consciousness beneath the London Eye (which is being used as a large signal transmitter) and find Mickey. Whilst doing so, the signal is sent out and the shop dummies come to life! Rose saves the day by using her gymnastics skills to save the Doctor and the anti-plastic he developed falls into the consciousness ending the invasion.

She ends with a choice: the Doctor or Mickey? She chooses a life with the Doctor.

Memorable Quotes
Rose: Who are you?
Doctor: I'm the Doctor
Rose: Yeah, but Doctor what?
Doctor: Just the Doctor
Rose: The Doctor?
Doctor: Hello

Boy: [When Rose comes to visit Clive] Dad! One of your nutters.

Doctor: [Talking to the Consciousness] Don't give me that! It's an invasion, plain and simple. Don't talk about constitutional rights!

Editor's Review
Rose is an action packed story fit into a mere 45 minutes. Due to its timescale, Rose focuses on progressing the character from a normal London resident to a time travel companion. The story is mostly focused on her perspective of the events with the Autons invading, which means that the Autons do not invade for a large part of the 45 minutes unlike Spearhead from Space

Despite this it is a really enjoyable story with a witty and cunning Doctor and a companion that ends up saving the day. There are a number of unusual and quite humorous events (the wheelie bin scene being one of them) and has some great characterisations and a link to the compensation culture and the degradation of the environment (although small). I look forward to the next episode feeling delighted in this opener. Well done Mr TV Davies!
